The Winter Solstice, also known as the winter festival, is one of the 24 solar terms in China which falls on December 22nd or one day before or after it.

冬至，又称冬节，每年公历的12 月 22 日或前后一天，是中国的二十四节气之一。

As the Winter Solstice is the first term to be established. It is often regarded as the starting point of China's 24 solar terms. Since this day marks a major change in climate, the ancient people attached great importance to the Winter Solstice, viewing it as significant as the Spring Festival.

冬至是最早确立的节气，它常被看作中国二十四节气的起点。由于冬至标志着一年中气候的重大变化，古人对冬至极为重视，民间流传有“冬至大如年”的说法。

中国古代一些文学作品将冬至分为三候：

一候

蚯蚓结

In the first phase, earthworms curl up.

蚯蚓在泥土之中蜷缩着身体，静候气温回升。

二候

麋角解

In the second phase, Elk antlers fall off.

冬至阴气盛极而衰，麋鹿在感知阴气渐退后，老角开始脱落，随之长出新的犄。

三候

水泉动

In the third phase, springs run down.

在冰封的水面下，泉水依然流动不息。

Eating Dumplings in the North

北方：吃饺子

According to legend, eating dumplings on Winter Solstice prevents frostbitten ears. Hence, people in northern China enjoy steaming dumplings to keep warm and celebrate the day.

传说冬至不吃饺子会冻耳朵，因此北方人习惯在这一天吃热气腾腾的饺子，既驱寒又美味。

Tasting Tangyuan in the South

南方：品汤圆

In southern China, people prefer sweet and sticky Tangyuan, symbolizing reunion and happiness. Its round shape represents family harmony and a fulfilling life.

南方人则偏爱甜糯的汤圆，寓意团圆和幸福。汤圆的圆形象征着家庭和睦与生活美满。

Ancestral Worship and Blessings

祭祖与祈福

Winter Solstice is also a key day for ancestral worship.Through traditional rituals,people express their remembrance and pray for peace and prosperity in the coming year.

冬至也是祭祖的重要日子，人们通过传统仪式寄托对先人的思念，同时祈求来年平安顺遂。
